Overwhelming questions…

Last Monday I tried to write a piece for my blog… it won’t be published as it really was a very angry version of what I wanted to write. As usual I was trying to find answers to those thorny issues and massive questions we encounter in Education and life, and which at times plague me in the wee small hours.

However, my never to surface piece did end with the words of the recently departed Archbishop Desmond Tutu,

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

That is how I mostly see my developing role as headteacher. Just two terms down, I am still learning on the job and about the job. It’s a role which is more than just one thing, and “little bits of good” all over the place seems to suit right now.

My first two terms were mostly days which were composites of many encounters with learners, staff, parents and colleagues. Developing those relationships was absolutely crucial. And now its even more imperative, that as a community we continue to aspire and thrive.

With this in mind, my big question today is, as the next few weeks in the horizon may be uncertain, how can I lead with compassion and conviction and ensure my team and school are alright?

I know many will be deeply concerned with the Omicron infection wave, and there will be others who will not find updated guidance easy to return to. It’s not a situation where we know the answers, and there is definitely not one definitive solution.

I suspect that the answer to my question lies somewhere within being comfortable with uncertainty, being adaptable and looking to the inspiring examples of those who are helping others.

In an overwhelming time I can choose to be overwhelmed or I can choose to overwhelm the world with good. I’m choosing the latter.

Happy New Year when it comes, and with what ever it brings.

The Enquiring Head Teacher.
